BUFFALO, June 3, 2015 — The 35th running of the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge® in Delaware Park will benefit two iconic Buffalo organizations -- Kevin Guest House and Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
J.P. Morgan will make donations to both on behalf of the more than 11,000 entrants expected at the Thursday, June 25 event, part of the more than $700,000 that will be donated at 13 J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge Series events worldwide in 2015.
The nation's first hospital hospitality house, Kevin Guest House is named in honor of Kevin Garvey, a 13-year-old who died of leukemia while being treated at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Kevin Guest House, the nation's first hospital hospitality house, offers a safe, warm, secure respite providing comfort, support and affordable accommodations for patients and their loved ones. It is named in honor of Kevin Garvey, a 13-year old boy with leukemia who was treated at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. His parents, Claudia & Cyril, and their seven other children, travelled from Western Pennsylvania for his treatment and noticed families sleeping in cars and waiting rooms because they couldn't afford hotels. In 1972, the Garvey family decided to purchase a Grand Victorian home (built in 1865) to assist those families for generations to come. Unfortunately Kevin lost his battle shortly afterwards, but his legacy continues.
The donation from J.P. Morgan will be earmarked for Kevin Guest House's Pay It Forward Program. Kevin Guest House suggests a donation of $25 per night from the 1,200 guests it serves annually to keep the house operating. However, the majority of guests cannot afford even this modest donation. The Pay It Forward program allows donors to sponsor a guest stay providing warm and compassionate care to families travelling for critical medical treatment.
"Thanks to the support from the JP Morgan Buffalo Corporate Challenge, Kevin Guest House will continue to serve families seeking a safe and comfortable place to stay while traveling for critical medical care away from home," said Tom Garvey, founding family member and campaign chair. "Kevin Guest House is committed to never turn away a patient family due to financial need and relies on the generosity of corporate partners, like J.P. Morgan, to provide this service to our guests."
The mission of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) is to understand, prevent and cure cancer. Founded in 1898, RPCI is one of the first cancer centers in the country to be named a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center and remains the only facility with this designation in Upstate New York. Roswell Park is a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the nation's leading cancer centers; maintains affiliate sites; and is a partner in national and international collaborative programs.
Specifically, The Angel Fund at Roswell Park will receive the donation from J.P. Morgan on behalf of the Corporate Challenge participants.
Thanks to The Angel Fund Program, funds are made available to assist Roswell Park patients, including travel to appointments, meals, gas, lodging, and sometimes co-pays (to serve as a bridge until Medicare coverage begins) for qualifying low-income patients. The Department of Psychosocial Oncology at Roswell Park administers The Angel Fund and any staff member can refer a patient for assistance.
"Thanks to J.P. Morgan's generosity, Roswell Park will continue to help ensure that patients and their families can receive additional financial assistance they may need throughout their cancer treatment," Candace Johnson, President and CEO, Wallace Family Chair of Translational Research, said. "The Angel Fund is critical in helping these patients during one of the most difficult times in their lives, and, on behalf of them, we are so grateful for J.P. Morgan's support."
