Championship returns to New York roots;
Central Park is site for June 1 race
NEW YORK, January 28, 2016 — The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge® Championship is returning to its home city.
The 33rd annual J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge Championship is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1, 2016 in New York's Central Park. The 3.5-mile road race brings together the first-place men's, women's and mixed teams from each of the 13 J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge Series cities — a total of 156 participants from 39 companies in 13 cities and seven countries.
Central Park was the selection for this year's Championship to commemorate a milestone year for the Series. The Corporate Challenge is celebrating its 40th consecutive year of operation, and the very first event was held in the Frederick Law Olmsted emerald gem on July 13, 1977.
This is the first time, however, that the Championship will actually be held within Central Park. The world's most prestigious corporate race debuted in 1983 and was held annually until 2008, primarily on the first Saturday in October, on Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan. After a year off in 2009, the Championship adopted an "Olympic rotation" style, visiting cities throughout the Corporate Challenge Series and integrating the Championship within the regularly scheduled Corporate Challenge in each city.
New York is the seventh city to be visited in this rotation and style, following Johannesburg (2010), Singapore (2011), Chicago (2012), Rochester, NY (2013), London (2014) and San Francisco (2015).
The Championship will start approximately five minutes before the first night of the New York J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge. The Big Apple stop in the Series has been in Central Park each year since 1977, and it now features two nights of racing. A total of 30,000 entrants are expected to participate in 2016.
Singapore runners gather at last year's Championship.
Memmert of Frankfurt (men), HSBC from London (women) and New York City's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (mixed) were the team champions at the 2015 J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge Championship, held in San Francisco on the Embarcadero at AT&T Park.
New York is one of 13 events that will be held in the 2016 J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge Series. The Corporate Challenge hosted 255,270 entrants from 7,677 companies in 2015.
