Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection
named as Rochester beneficiary
ROCHESTER, April 1, 2014 — Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection has been named beneficiary of the 2014 J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge® in Rochester, scheduled for Thursday, May 29 at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection is a nationally recognized youth-development program that for nearly three decades has helped at-risk students stay in school and successfully graduate while providing invaluable part-time work experience and job skills to help prepare them for life after graduation. Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection employs full-time youth advocates that operate out of HW-SC partner schools. The youth advocates connect students to employment training, college preparation support and tutoring services, while helping them stay engaged in the classroom earning their high school diplomas. Students trained through Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection’s Youth Employment Training Academy and working with Hillside’s employer partners graduate on time at a rate of 94 percent.
“We are thrilled to be the recipient of this year’s J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge. Our program relies on community collaboration. That support enables Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection to be a solution to the issue of low graduation rates in Rochester,” said Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection president Augie Melendez.
“The race attracts hundreds of Upstate New York companies, many of which employ our students and we are excited that they will be able to further support our students while enjoying the race.”
J.P. Morgan will make a donation on behalf of all Corporate Challenge participants that will help sustain the HW-SC program as it works to support the 2,400 students in the Rochester City School District to stay in school, achieve academic success and graduate from high school with the skills and confidence they need to be successful at home, at college and in the workplace.
Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection is an affiliate of Hillside Family of Agencies, one of the oldest and largest family and youth non-profit human services organizations in New York State. In 2013, Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection was named to the Catalogue of Philanthropy of Greater Washington and the Social Impact Exchange S&I 100, an index of top-performing U.S. nonprofits that are poised for growth.
Registration for the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge in Rochester is now open and more than 11,000 entrants from over 450 companies are expected. The 3.5-mile race will begin at 7 p.m. on May 29 at RIT followed by post-race hospitality.
